Dr Katherine Moline
Senior Lecturer, Graphics Media Coordinator, Design Honours CoordinatorSchool of Design Studies
Qualifications
BVA SCA, Grad Dip SCA, Cert Parsons, MDes UTS, PhD UNSWKatherine Moline’s research explores the cross-overs between avant-gardism in visual art and contemporary experimental design. Her particular foci are how experimental design reformulates: strategies of the historic avant-garde, design in the context of globalisation, the social pacts of design, and challenges to mainstream consumerism. Since co-convening the symposium sds2k4: Experimental and Cross-Cultural Design, 2004 (a collaboration between the University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney and the University of Western Sydney), she curated the exhibition ‘Connections: Experimental Design’ and introduced leaders in experimental and critical design, including Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby, Marti Guixé, Cecil Balmond and ARUP Advanced Geometry Unit, Ana Mir and Emili Padros, Anne Wilson and Jop van Bennekom to Sydney audiences. Her research has been published in numerous journal articles, conference papers, and exhibition catalogues both nationally and internationally and she is on the editorial board of the online peer-reviewed journal Material Thinking. As a practicing artist, Katherine’s work investigates how design-manufacturing processes can be diverted to the production of sculptures. Her artworks have featured in a series of solo and group exhibitions and are included a number of national collections.
