The National Sculpture Prize (NSP) is one of Australia's most significant showcases for
contemporary Australian sculpture. The exhibition is on view 3-6 May at the COFA
Exhibition/Performance Spaces. It will highlight the works submitted by COFA Faculty, staff
and students for this prestigious and generous prize ($50,000 award to the winning artist).
Among the exhibiting sculptors are three finalists - Bonita Ely, Richard Goodwin and
Ian Howard. Other outstanding artists in this exhibition include Terry Culver, Ella Dreyfus, Gunter
Hojdyssek, Damian King, Francois Limondin, Martin Sims, Kerry Smith and Deborah Clare Veronica
West.
The exhibition is not simply comprised of works grouped under a single curatorial theme or
statement. Rather, both finished sculptures and plans for proposed new artworks are shown with a
view towards showcasing the diversity of creative ingenuity and methodologies taken by
long-established practicing artists and by those just getting their artistic careers underway. The
exhibition focuses on sculpture in flux, the "states of transformation" from concept to creation.
There are few creative restrictions to National Sculpture Prize submissions, e.g. works must
be indoor, not site-specific and not weigh more than one tonne. The works exhibited in States of
Transformation highlight the unique and innovative approaches taken by the above artists to
translate inspired concepts into three-dimensional works.
