The Creative Media Institute (CMI) is a networked platform for world-class multi-disciplinary research and application of new forms of technology-enabled creative media, with the focus on incubating and supporting collaborative research with industry. The aim of the Institute is to consolidate creative media research at UNSW, positioning UNSW as an internationally leading hub for creative media research and development.

CMI operates as a network bringing together four key UNSW centres along with a number of other centres interested in collaborative, cross-disciplinary research with the objective of addressing creative media developments. Bringing together activities from the Faculties of COFA, FASS, Engineering, Australian School of Business, Built Environment, Law and Science along with twelve UNSW research centres and four UNSW Schools, CMI facilitates cross-disciplinary research. It identifies and develops the practical and theoretical possibilities of nascent and current forms of technology-driven visual, sound, text and spatial media in relevant industries and professions. It partners with other Australian and international research institutes and centres in its initiatives and activities.

CMI engages researchers in a wide range of fields from new media, aesthetics, creative writing, visual culture, journalism, film, media studies, computer science, cognitive science, mining virtual reality, climate modeling, cyberspace law, urban studies, business and entrepreneurship.
