Hear from Maryam Zahid, Founder and Director of ‘Afghan Women on the Move’, an organisation dedicated to empowering Afghan and multicultural women in Australia.
In this talk, Maryam will offer a deeper understanding of the key issues facing women who have newly arrived in Australia from Afghanistan, including experiences of isolation, financial hardship, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress, and mental health issues. Maryam will discuss the role of her organisation in providing advocacy, social connectivity, settlement, and mental health support, offering a safe platform for the Afghan community in Sydney and beyond. Join us to witness these empowering stories of resilience and support the movement towards positive change and hopeful futures.
This talk expands on themes explored by artist Kubra Khademi whose work is presented in the 24th Biennale of Sydney, ‘Ten Thousand Suns’, a major exhibition revisiting legacies of collective resistance, strength, and exuberance. The exhibition at UNSW Galleries particularly explores a lineage of overlapping histories of connection between Australia and the Muslim world.
