Coordinator, Master of Design (Coursework), School of Design Studies
Carol Longbottom is the Coordinator of the Master of Design by coursework in the School of Design Studies, Faculty of the College of Fine Arts. She has been a full-time academic with the university since 1991.
Carol's research interested involve the investigation of ways in which the relationships between design practice and theory can be explored in the studio and the power and significance of historical precedents when considering solutions to contemporary design problems and ways in which those ideas may be represented. Carol's current work in this area, comes out of a John Yu Fellowship and is entitled Theorizing Practice: Educating Undergraduate Design Students for Critical Understanding of Contemporary Design Practice. This research represents a preliminary engagement with colleagues at the University of Rome and is designed to initiate research into a case, which demonstrates the integration of theory courses and design studio within a design program.
Carol’s is also investigating the modelling of multi-disciplinary design teaching through Project X3 an Experiential Multi Disciplinary Learning and Teaching Research Environment at UNSW with The College of Fine Arts, Faculty of the Built Environment and the Faculty of Engineering.
