The PhD Completion Scholarship of $5,000 is offered to PhD candidates who lodge an Intention to Submit, and that Intention is confirmed by the supervisor, at no later than 2 months before their 3 year marker in their PhD (or for part time students, the equivalent). The objectives of the scholarship are to support candidates in finalising arrangements for submission.
Each Award will have a value of $5,000 and will be tenable for a period of one term.
A maximum of 2 recipients will be awarded the scholarship per term.
Examples of what the funds should be used for include:
- Professional editor of theses, approximately $1,500 (for further information see - https://research.unsw.edu.au/before-thesis-submission).
- Exhibition/installation/documentation of art and design practice-based research (PBR) for examination, approximately $2,000.
- Support for travel to present research in an international context while the thesis is under examination, approximately $1,500.
Applicants must submit the following to the HDR Administrator two months before their three-year marker:
- A 300 word Expression of Interest (EOI) including achievable budget to the value of $5,000 with quotes attached for proposed use of funds.
- A clearly described thesis synopsis with a paragraph for each chapter and indication of where Practice-Based Research or Practice-Led Research is included.
- An achievable research plan with detailed monthly milestones for early completion that is developed in consultation with the primary supervisor.
Selection Criteria
Each applicant will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate:
- Record of timely completion of key milestones for Confirmation Review and/or Year Two Research Progress Review.
- Evidence of all items necessary for the timely completion of key milestones for Year Three Research Progress Review.
- A clearly described thesis synopsis with a paragraph for each chapter and indication of where the Practice-Based Research or Practice-Led Research is included.
- An achievable research plan with detailed monthly milestones for early completion that is developed in consultation with the primary supervisor.
- An achievable budget to the value of $5,000 with quotes attached for proposed use of funds.
Interview
Shortlisted applicants may be invited to attend an interview.
Holding other scholarships
The recipient should not normally hold any other Scholarship or Award (except for government-funded or equity scholarships) except with the permission of the Manager, UNSW Scholarships.
