Why do we accumulate things when ultimately we are forced to renounce them? What is the point of all this grasping?
With this question in mind, Morgan Veness examines the act of collecting. Working across sculpture, installation and drawing, Veness is interested in repurposing found objects. 'Mr. Jizolarks’s Concrete Data' was created from the artist’s time living in Japan in 2016.
'Mr. Jizolark' is an amalgamation of mudlark (a person who scours the river mud for objects of value) and the Jizo shrines of Japan. The Jizo are small, local shrines utilised as places for protection, but in Veness' research they illustrate the sorting of amassed, fragmented bits and accumulated pieces into poetic encounters — hauntological gatherings.
This body of work weaves together a personal narrative from a small island in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, where Veness lived in 2016. Salvaging discarded material located mostly on the shore, or repurposing second-hand objects that speak to particular times and places, Veness reshuffles and reorganises these objects to reconcile the permanent, abiding nature of collecting in an ephemeral, post-internet world.
