In this talk and workshop, Minneapolis-based curators Pavel Pyś and Sara Cluggish discuss key projects that have informed their respective approaches to curating. Pyś and Cluggish will draw on a variety of work experiences and associated projects — from the context of the small-scale public institution and independent residency program to scholarly research institute and large-scale interdisciplinary art centre. Facilitated by Dr Lizzie Muller, the curatorial masterclass is aimed at staff and postgraduate students with an interest in curatorial practice.
Sara Cluggish is the Director of FD13 Residency for the Arts in Minneapolis, a nomadic, event-based residency program which invites artists to create new work and present it live. Over the past 8 years, she has developed a gradual focus on commissioning moving image and performance practices which has led to an investigation of durational curating. Sara will speak about the balanced responsibility that curators must show to both artists and audiences. She sees the discursive residency event as a unique format which brings both these parties together to engage with artistic production in real time. Alongside formative professional experiences and forthcoming projects, she will share detailed examples from her first season of FD13 residency events which explored themes of health, illness and the body in a state of flux.
In recent years, Pavel Pyś has transitioned from his role at Henry Moore Institute, a center devoted to the study of sculpture, to the interdisciplinary context of the Walker Art Center, an organization dedicated to commissioning and collecting artwork from 1950 to today. With reference to a selection of previously curated exhibitions - which have included unclassified minerals, refuted geological artifacts, and rare architectural prototypes - Pavel will discuss the value of curating across mediums, disciplines and time periods. Delving deeper into recent exhibitions, such as The Body Electric, Pavel will speak to the significance of intergenerational exhibition making and recontextualizing seemingly fixed art historical narratives and movements. Since joining the Walker, Pavel has also contributed to the three-year Interdisciplinary Initiative, which brings into close collaboration the institution’s Visual and Performing Arts Departments. Reflecting on this initiative, Pavel will describe how the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of contemporary artistic practice informs and challenges exhibition making, collecting and commissioning.
