Beijing-based visual artist Rose Wong joins Yu-Chieh Li, Judith Neilson Post-Doctoral Fellow of Contemporary Art at UNSW Art & Design, for a discussion on her recent work within the context of time-based media, performativity and gender in contemporary Chinese art.
Rose Wong is a practising visual artist and art educator born in Hong Kong and based in Beijing. She was former programme Director of Education in Ullen centre of contemporary Art and has an MA in artist teaching and contemporary art practice at Goldsmiths College, University of London; and a Bachelor of Arts (Hon), Comparative Literature and Fine Art, University of Hong Kong. Her work is widely exhibited internationally and supported by organisations and funds such as Geoff Raby collections, TWT Creative Precinct and the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art. Rose Wong is currently doing an International Residency at TWT Creative Precinct in St Leonards.
Yu-Chieh Li is Judith Neilson Postdoctoral Fellow of Contemporary Art at UNSW Art & Design, Sydney. Her current research concerns performativity, artistic networks, and diaspora from the Greater China region from the 1970s to the 1980s. Her broader research interests include conceptualism, time-based media, and aesthetic forms of postsocialism. Before joining UNSW Art & Design, she was an Andrew W. Mellon C-MAP Fellow at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and an adjunct researcher at Tate Research Centre: Asia. Li is co-editor of the book Xu Bing: Beyond the Book from the Sky (Springer, forthcoming). She is working on a book on issues of audience participation, appropriation, and performativity during the ’85 New Wave in mainland China.
