I vividly recall looking out the window of the train and, as it began to depart, becoming nauseous and overwhelmed by a profound sense of urgency. Searching for the source of my discomfort I soon realised that I was not moving. I was hallucinating! The adjacent train was departing and I was confusing the moving visual scene outside my window for the movement of my train. For a brief instant the paradoxical existence of these two simultaneous realities — of being in motion, and stillness — revealed something fundamental about my relationship with my surroundings.
SEGUE by Neil Brandhorst plays with both audience interaction and perception. His installations experiment with space, light and movement to challenge conditions of spectatorship.
