Milan Design Week: A&D Alumni selected for prestigious design showcase

Milan Fairgrounds, Rho (Milan)

Acknowledged as the international reference point for all things new and innovative in furniture and object design, the Salone Del Mobile Milano (Milan Design Week), now in its 56th edition, is an unmissable opportunity for design industry professionals and for anyone else interested current design trends.
This year, from 4-9 April, two UNSW Art & Design graduates will join the ranks of critically acclaimed and commercially influential designers on exhibition at this major international festival. Blake Griffiths and Nila Rezaei have both created works that link beauty, function, and deeply held concerns about global environmental issues and human displacement.
Griffiths will present two works that interrogate materiality and the use of synthetics in the modern world. Home is where you carry it is portable flooring made entirely from recycled plastic bin liners and hand-spun nettle, the aim of which is to offer a sense of comfort and protection to displaced people of the world. Bag to drag your life across the border is a tough, flexible, and made-to-last container that draws an unequivocal link between sustainable living and the requirement of dedicated effort to improve the environmental condition of the planet.
Nila Rezaei will show her recent project, Dispersion, an interactive mirror that aims to encourage discourse around personal and collective choices that effect the environment. Rezaei’s concern is the impact of oil spills on world wildlife and she’s constructed her mirror with an in-built dispersion process that requires user engagement. “It’s a metaphor, “she says, “to an oily surface that visibly transforms to become clear when heated.”
