Illawarra Association for the Visual Arts (IAVA) members honour one of our Indigenous members, printmaker and ceramic artist Uncle Vic Chapman AM. We celebrate his achievements with this printmaking exhibition.
‘He continues to exhibit nationally and internationally, translating the stories of the Yuwaalaraay to ceramics and print making. Five years ago, he was invited to UNSW after the Head of Printmaking, Michael Kempson, saw his ceramics and thought the art would translate well to printmaking. Every Friday since then he has travelled from his south coast home to UNSW Art & Design, where he mentors students at the printmaking studio, Cicada Press.’ Diane Nazaroff UNSW Newsroom, Nov 2018
Uncle Vic Chapman, was conferred an Honorary Fellowship by UNSW Chancellor David Gonski at the Art & Design graduation ceremony in November 2018.
IAVA promotes the arts with travelling exhibitions, curatorial opportunities, visual arts based projects and community engagement.
Many works reflect the geography of the Illawarra region. South of the Royal National Park, the Illawarra is skirted by native forest stretching along the escarpment and the ocean along the east coast encompassing Local Government Areas Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven.
'Out of the Illawarra 2019' is an exhibition of Contemporary works by Regional NSW artists. A diverse set of ideas and themes are represented using a variety of media. IAVA promotes the arts in a wide range of forums such as travelling exhibitions, curatorial opportunities, visual arts based projects and community engagement.
Exhibiting in the Parliament House, Fountain Court from Tuesday 6 August to Thursday 29 August 2019.
