Soda_Jerk wins the $100,000 Ian Potter Moving Image Commission

UNSW Art & Design graduates and sisters, Dan and Dominique Angeloro, who together make up the multi-award-winning artist team, Soda_Jerk, have been awarded the prestigious $100,000 Ian Potter Moving Image Commission (IPMIC).
The prize forms part of Australia’s most significant long term commissioning program supporting new contemporary moving image art by Australian artists. A joint initiative of The Ian Potter Cultural Trust and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), this biennial award represents a ten-year commitment to the artistic medium.
Selected from an impressive and competitive field of candidates, Soda_Jerk’s win follows the success of their 2016 work, The Was, an extraordinarily sample-based video mix of 20th century pop culture imagery and sound, created in collaboration with Australian electronic music group, The Avalanches.
The commission will make possible Soda-Jerk’s new work, Terror Nullius, described by the artists as a “rogue remapping of national mythology” interweaving fragments of “Australian Gothic, eco-horror, and road movie” genres.
Terror Nullius follows on from the success of the two previous IPMIC commissions, The Calling, by UNSW Art & Design graduate, Angelica Mesiti, and Daniel Crooks’ Phantom Ride (2016), both of which enjoyed critical and popular success upon premiering at ACMI.
In announcing Soda_Jerk as the winning recipient, IPMIC Judge and ACMI Director and Chief Executive, Katrina Sedgwick, praised their innovative work in the rapidly expanding field of moving image art.

Their work is challenging and cheeky, clever, playful and insightful – and it stood out amongst an incredibly competitive field of applicants. Terror Nullius will confront, poke at and recontextualise the clichés, stereotypes and overwhelming whiteness of our Australian cinema history - and it’s so great that ACMI, as the national museum of film, television, video games and digital art and culture, is hosting its world premiere next year.”
Soda_Jerk’s Terror Nullius will have its world premiere at the IPMIC in 2018.
